Chico Senior Softball Club, INC,
House wares Collection Project for Fire Victims
Ophir Fire in Oroville and Humboldt Fire in Paradise
Butte County, California, June 2008

Several players approached us relative to donating household furniture and goods to victims of the fires who lost their homes. One senior softball player and manager of the Boys of Summer team John Sturgell has been quietly collecting and distributing items to fire victims for many years, as his personal way of helping others.

There is a consensus among players in our league that this would be a good way of helping those whose lives have been disrupted by the fire. These are the people who have lost everything. John has already depleted his inventory by providing two victims with a complete household of needs.

Many of us have furniture, appliances, TVs, beds, chairs, couches, shelving, dressers, that are extra, or just stored away.  All kitchen appliances, coffee pots, cookers, pots, pans, dishes, etc are needed.  Small tools, kitchen utinsils, bedding, towels, blankets, and rags are also in need.  If you use it in your home, we can use it in our program.

At this time storage and distribution  is handled by John Sturgell at his property south of  Oroville. He already has an active system for handling the requests from people in need.  We feel he is best suited to handle our donations through his organization.

We have members who are willing to provide pickup and transportation to Sturgell. Several have volunteered to help load items on the truck(s).  Many of the items already donated are large so we may need to make several trips over the course of a couple of weeks.

We are looking for additional storage in Chico so we can consolidate items for trucking.
If you can at least box smaller items, it will make it easier for us to load and unload on the truck.

If you have anything to donate, contact your team manager. He will relay the information to your league commissioner. You will be given instructions on how to proceed.

If you can volunteer some labor to work on loading and unloading a truck, follow the same procedure: tell your team manager.

If you have no items to donate,  or you have no available time to work on  a truck, why not donate a few dollars for gas for the truck trips for pickup and delivery. Every bit of support will be greatly appreciated.

We will be listing names and phone numbers of contacts, in our next notice Meantime contact your team manager.

The Chico Senior Softball Club Board of Directors has over the years discussed a charitable project but never adopted one. Let’s hope we can make this a success.
